into the dark
One of my college roommates was an army brat who had recently been stationed with her family in Germany. She was fluent in several languages, well-traveled, a creative type to the core, and loved her heavy metal. So already, she was cooler than me on every level. It only took us a semester (maybe less) to realize that we were polar opposites. Perfect example is when she took me to an underground heavy metal concert and I was THAT girl who turned up in a floral tube top and white flared jeans, but I rocked out with her in the pit regardless. Anyway, I like to believe that if I met her now under different circumstances, rather than during the years where I was a frou frou SoCal valley girl, that we would be great friends.
I digress. It wasn't until I moved to New York that I discovered my love for darker colors, and how this once-roommate of mine -- who had a wardrobe filled with black and dark blue separates -- had it right all along. Of course, I still gravitate toward color and bright ensembles, but then there are moments when I put on something monochromatic and feel most comfortable in my skin. These are the times I thank her for being one of the first to open my eyes to the dark side.
